Here we have what is arguably Autopsy’s best album but remastered and with a bonus disc. The main disc is classic death metal, not a technical or fast as modern day death metal but just as brutal in it’s own right. I actually found the disc better than their greatest hits, Torn From The Grave, in every possible way except for the shared tracks of course.

MANTIC RITUAL is formerly Meltdown, and they have released this exact album before as that band (with the exception of one song) and I can honestly say this remake is well worth the purchase. The tracks have been updated and the songs are harder, faster, and more aggressive. It’s louder too (which is always a good thing). With this update, Mantic Ritual has solidified itself as one of the greatest thrash/speed bands this decade has to offer (right there with Skeletonwitch and Black Tide).

These boys are a force to be reckoned with and if you HAVEN’T heard MANTIC RITUAL yet I highly recommend it. They are original, catchy, and impressively technical. My only complaint is upon the first few listens, it’s difficult to tell which songs are which, but after many run-throughs (and you will have many-do not resist) you will know every solo and every riff as if they were tattooed into your brain.

I’ve been following Kreator ever since Terrible Certainty and have always been seduced by the passion Mille Petrozza and his cohorts have put across in each release. Mille – like Machine Head’s Rob Flynn – is first and foremost a metal fan as well as a musician.

He lives, breathes, sleeps and eats metal. This release is full of the usual conviction and intensity but also has more ‘hooks’ or catchy melodies than its predecessor Enemy of God. This is no Opeth or Agalloch. Progressive is not a common word in Kreator circles, although the terrific Outcast and Endorama albums show that Kreator can dabble in the subtle and melancholic if it chooses to.

Sepultura has been out there, pounding our ears for decades now. They may not have achieved fame in America found by more mainstream thrashers, but they have been a heavy metal fan’s band for those who respect the noise. Either through Cavalera or Green, Sepultura cannot be denied.

A-lex is not an album made of tracks or singles. Let’s face it, this is not the 80s and people in America are not screaming for metal like they used to. The landscape has changed. But this album is solid and worthy of many accolades. It has a cohesive feel to it. Though there are breaks with the titular songs, almost like interludes, there is still a feeling that this album is an album and not a collection of songs.

I liken it to both Arise and Dante XXI, especially the latter. True, both are related to/based on literature, but more importantly, both Dante XXI and A-lex get close to some sort of rock-opera feel. Not cheesy, just thematic.
